Born in Pakistan to Dutch parents, Hansma grew up between The Netherlands, Thailand, and Australia. In 2013, he graduated from Piet Zwart Institute. In his recent work, habitable spaces are observed and questioned with our perception propelled by history toward an establishment of memory and politics. Working predominantly with film, objects, voiceovers, performance, and photography, the work asks questions of history and forgotten moments to find alternative results of past events, and therefore a divergent futurity. Recorded voices flow within public and private spaces revealing intricacies and links between how the private illuminates broader social phenomena, and ultimately how this is remembered-by not only the viewers, but held within materiality itself. Hansma’s writings and visual productions co-exist and intersect as studio practices.

Recent exhibitions and performances include: Museum of Natural Mystery, Perth; O.K Gallery, Perth; Institute of Contemporary Arts, Perth; TENT, Rotterdam; West, Den Haag; Fremantle Art Centre, Fremantle; and, Žinkovy International Art Festival, Czech Republic. Currently, Hansma is participating in Ikono On Air Festival with screenings of his film Lost To A View in, among others, Centre Georges- Pompidou, France and A + A Centro- Espositivo, Slovenia. From October until February 2014, he is artist-in-residence at The Centre international d'art et du paysage de l'île de Vassivière.
